I have owned my Golf TDI for about 8 months. I am continuously surprised by the engine performance of this diesel car. I was expecting great mileage and handling - it's a VW after all. The acceleration however, was a complete surprise. This thing is a rocket! Fit and finish are excellent, although there is an odd bit of wind noise above 55 mph from the door area on the drivers side. We just experienced our first snow and I must say, this car is very sure footed. The ABS is there and available for sudden/panic stops but is otherwise not necessary. The diesel version is a bit pricy and while the price of gas has fallen recently, diesel has not. Still, the additional MPG outweighs the cost per gallon. Overall, I am very pleased and would encourage anyone looking for a fun economical car to consider the VW Golf TDI.
The Golf R is a great car. Subtle, but handsome looks, brilliant interior and the general feel of quality just shows everywhere. Daily driving it is comfortable, beautifully equipped and rides very well. Once you decide to give it a bit of a push and get out on some winding roads, it just completely changes. The four wheel drive system provides an astonishing amount of grip while the turbo charged 2.0L engine surges once above 3000 RPM all the way to redline. It gives you a gentle push back in the seat and it wants to get to that next corner as quick as it can. Brakes are fantastic and slow you just as quickly. Four six feet people can sit in it in comfort without issue and the interior feels more like a luxury car then hot hatch.
This car blends sportiness with everyday use. That's what I wanted when I bought it and that's what I get. Fuel mileage isn't as good as most contemporary vehicles but I get 25 mpg combined.
