Transmission: Automatic Color:White Interior Color: Black Average Vehicle Review: (4.5 reviews) The Golf R is a great car. Subtle, but handsome looks, brilliant interior and the general feel of quality just shows everywhere. Daily driving it is comfortable, beautifully equipped and rides very well. Once you decide to give it a bit of a push and get out on some winding roads, it just completely changes. The four wheel drive system provides an astonishing amount of grip while the turbo charged 2.0L engine surges once above 3000 RPM all the way to redline. It gives you a gentle push back in the seat and it wants to get to that next corner as quick as it can. Brakes are fantastic and slow you just as quickly. Four six feet people can sit in it in comfort without issue and the interior feels more like a luxury car then hot hatch.

Transmission: Automatic Color:Silver Interior Color: Black Average Vehicle Review: (4.8 reviews) Went in to look at Ford Focus or Fusion, but was disappointed at interior space, power, and handling. Saw a red VW Golf TDI sitting there and decided to test drive. Wow. About the same size on exterior, but roomy inside. Took off like a jet compared to the Ford and handled like a dream. And as a diesel, I'm getting around 40 mpg all the time with what should be a very reliable power plant. My iPhone hooks up to Bluetooth for hands-free calls and music. It's a blast to drive each day. Love it!

Great Car at Great Price

Went in to look at Ford Focus or Fusion, but was disappointed at interior space, power, and handling. Love it!

Pros

  • Fuel Economy: Getting around 40mpg for each tank full!
  • Ride and Handling: Spunky, grippy, and fun!
  • Interior Space: Nice room inside for a small hatch.

Cons

  • Cabin Noise: Still a little too loud on the highway

- JD Emmerich, 2014 Volkswagen Golf

Wonderful & always a fun to drive

There is a lot to tell about this car, the driving experience is far better compared to the hatchback in the economy segment. The interior in terms of quality is way ahead, the smooth drive, the turns all perfect. Glad to be driving this car and looking ahead to many more years. Thanks Carmax!

Pros

  • Ride and Handling: It's very smooth when road condition is good.
  • Power: Pickup is really smooth, get up to speed without any hiccups
  • Cargo Space: Lots of cargo space when you push down the rear passenger seat for extra cargo

Cons

  • Cabin Noise: Too much cabin noise when you hit a cement road or a very grainy road.
  • Braking: Had problems with the brake, they were squealing and I had to go for repairs.
  • Interior Space: There was a foul smell coming off from the air vents, mainly due to cabin filter which was in a very poor state.

Fantastic car with many pros

The Golf R is a great car.

Pros

  • Safety: Air bags everywhere, traction control and solid build quality really shine in adverse conditions and accidents.
  • Ride and Handling: Not too stiff and well mannered for the drive to work, but aggressive enough to take it to the track on the weekend.
  • Cargo Space: With the seats up you can fit in a ton, drop the back seats and you reach close to wagon levels of storage.

Cons

  • Cost to Maintain: It is a German car so maintenance costs are more money then a Japanese or American made car. However, if you can do simple fluid changes yourself, this is not a worry.
  • Fuel Economy: It is a bit low on fuel economy and driven carefully I have pulled 30MPG on a trip. However, MPG is not the first thing to think of when buying a car like this.
