About The Volkswagen Beetle

FAQ

Is Volkswagen Still Making the Volkswagen Beetle?

The original Volkswagen Beetle was designed all the way back in the 1930s. In 1998, however, Volkswagen began offering a new, updated version of the Volkswagen Beetle. Volkswagen recently announced that they will stop producing the Beetle in 2019.

Where is the Engine in a New Volkswagen Beetle?

The engine of the original Volkswagen Beetle in 1938 was located in the back of the car. However, the engine on the new Volkswagen Beetle (1998 and later model years) is now located in the front of the vehicle.

Is the Volkswagen Beetle a German Car?

The Volkswagen Beetle for the US market is no longer manufactured in Germany. Instead, models made for sale in the North American market are manufactured at Volkswagen's factory in Mexico. The Volkswagen Beetle still features the famed German engineering that it and all Volkswagen models are renowned for.

Vehicle Summary

Few cars on the road are more iconic than the Volkswagen Beetle, and few cars have been on the road for longer. While the Volkswagen Beetle, affectionately known as “the bug,” may have a long history, it certainly isn't outdated in any way. In 1998, Volkswagen began selling their updated Volkswagen New Beetle, and, in 2012, they debuted the new Beetle's second generation. The second-generation Volkswagen Beetle comes in multiple engine options and features a host of exciting new technology. For those who appreciate both classic styling and modern performance, the second-generation Volkswagen Beetle is a vehicle that certainly lives up to its legacy.

Easy process, love it!

I had a Beatle in 1964 & have wanted a New Beetle since they came out. I finally purchased my 2008 Beetle in 2012. I had it one year and had a terrible accident. There was NO doubt in my mind that I would buy another one-and I did (2010 model). This car is so big inside-very deceiving when you see it from the outside. It rides so smooth, I love the fold down seats if I have to put something big and long in the trunk. And hey, it's just so darn cute!

Pros

  • Safety: I was in a horrific accident in my 1-yr old 2008 Beetle. I was hit head on, then rolled over 2x into the next lane where a guy hit me broadside on the driver's side. I was cut out of my car. It was awful, but my Beetle saved me. I went right out and purchased a 2010 Beetle! I LOVE my car!
  • Styling: This car is so ME. really...

Cons

  • Dashboard: I don’t like that the speedometer doesn’t show my speed in increments of 10 mph. I have a hard time seeing my exact speed. I use my speed control when I can but am frustrated on local roads where I have to keep my speed at 45 or 50.

My Dream Car

I've love VW Beetles since they first hit the scene again in 1998 and right after high school I was able to purchase a 2003 and fell in love with it. Once the 2012-2014 were released I knew I had to have it, I love my new car it looks good on the road and makes me feel good when I'm rolling with the sunroof back! I have a metallic reef blue color, very pretty!

Pros

  • Reliability: Gets where I need to be
  • Interior Space: Plenty of room in a small car
  • Styling: I love the new model, it reminds me of a Porsche and I look and feel very fancy while I'm driving it!

Cons

  • Fuel Economy: A bit of a gas guzzler
