The 2023 BMW 430i is sporty, fuel-efficient, and comfortable
The BMW 4 Series is based on the 3 Series sedan but comes in three forms: a coupe, a convertible, and a Gran Coupe that, despite its name, is a sedan with coupe-like proportions. There are only a few luxury brands that offer a compact coupe and convertible like the 4 Series, with the Audi A5 being the most competitive example.
The 430i is the base trim of the 4 Series lineup, featuring a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. 430i xDrive models add all-wheel drive. The sportier M440i trim adds a more powerful six-cylinder engine and other performance upgrades, and we review it separately.
The 2023 BMW 430i saw no significant changes from the prior year. The 2024 model did get an interior update, so you might want to compare the two to see which one you prefer. Overall, the 2023 430i delivers an engaging driving experience without sacrificing comfort and provides plenty of luxury and technology.

5 reasons to buy the 2023 BMW 430
What We Like
Drivability: The 4 Series has plenty of power even in its base 430i coupe form, which is the model Edmunds tested. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, quicker than the previous generation's 6.2 seconds. Handling is a 4 Series strength, with stable composure on winding roads. The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and always chooses the right gear, making this an easy car to live with.
Great fuel economy: The rear-wheel-drive 430i coupe gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in combined driving, making it one of the most efficient vehicles in its class (xDrive models are estimated at 27 mpg combined).
Edmunds observed 30.5 mpg on its evaluation route, proving that these estimates should be achievable in the real world. The four-cylinder's excellent performance doesn't exact a penalty at the pump.Comfortable ride: Edmunds' test vehicle had the available Dynamic Handling package, which adds an adaptive suspension. It struck a nice balance between compliant and firm. Rougher roads didn't upset the coupe, and it rode comfortably on most types of pavement. Even if you don't have sporty intentions, this package still delivers a luxurious ride. The standard suspension should produce an even cushier ride.
What Needs Improvement
Headroom for taller drivers: The standard sunroof can make headroom an issue for taller drivers. Edmunds' test driver, who is about 6-foot-4, had to adjust his seating position to avoid making contact with the headliner. Even then hitting larger potholes would cause him to hit his head. Since the sunroof comes standard, the 430i is better suited to those who are 6 foot tall or shorter.
