Second generation BMW X4
BMW simplified the X4 lineup for the second generation, equipping all X4 models with all-wheel drive and limiting the engine choices to the turbocharged gas-fueled four-cylinder called the xDrive30i and the mild hybrid six-cylinder engine called the M40i.
Inside, the X4 provides seating for five passengers in two rows. There’s somewhat less interior space in the X4 compared to the square-backed X3, about 13 cubic feet less when the rear seats are folded down. However, there's still plenty of headroom for rear-seat passengers.
BMW delivers its usual high-quality interior on all X4 trim levels, with features including thigh support and adjustable side bolsters in the front row, plus tech features like multiple USB-C ports, an easy-to-use navigation system, and BMW’s Digital Key Plus, which allows you to use your phone as your key to the X4.

First generation BMW X4
The first generation of the BMW X4 offered a variety of engine choices and trim levels. The first years started with the xDrive28i four-cylinder and the xDrive35i six-cylinder engines.
Midway through the 2016 model year, the M40i trim replaced the xDrive35i, offering more power from the turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The xDrive28i and M40i continued in production to the end of the 2018 model year. Regardless of engine choice, all X4 models from the beginning of production have been equipped with all-wheel drive.
What didn’t change was BMW’s comfortable and functional interior, with sport seats that enable long drives while minimizing fatigue. As a premium SUV, the X4 offered advanced features in infotainment and driver assistance, though several features (like a rearview camera) that were initially available became standard equipment in later years.
