2019 BMW X4: A sporty interpretation of the SUV

Nowadays, it's easy to lose track of an SUV in the sea of similarly shaped and sized vehicles. If you're seeking something that stands out from the crowd, the 2019 BMW X4 could be just what you're looking for. It's based on the boxier X3 but opts for a sleek sloping rear roofline and more athletic stance.

The X4 received a full redesign for 2019 and features bolder styling that makes it look more substantial than its predecessor. The interior is also updated and adopts BMW's contemporary layout and appearance. As is the case with the previous X4, the tapering roofline negatively affects rear passenger space and cargo capacity, but it should still suffice for most shoppers.

If the hit to practicality is too much for you, the BMW X3 should give you back the space you need, but it won't be quite as fun to drive as the X4. For more comparable rivals, we recommend the Porsche Macan and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

What We Like

Powerful engines: The BMW X4 comes with a 248-horsepower four-cylinder base engine that accelerates this SUV to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. For performance-minded drivers, a 355-horsepower six-cylinder engine is an option that will get you to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. Both engines provide smooth, manageable power delivery, and the transmission keeps all that power readily available.

Uniquely stylish: The BMW X4 has a laundry list of options to tailor the vehicle to the buyer’s personal style. That means with the wide variety of colors, different wheel styles, and several upholstery and interior trims available, there's a good chance you'll find one that matches your particular preference. The Premium package option includes a number of convenient features and is worth searching for in a pre-owned model.

Fun to drive: The BMW X4 is designed to deliver a more performance-focused driving experience compared to the X3, due in part to its lower ride height and wider stance. Its handling is confidently sporty, and it's bolstered by responsive steering and powerful brakes. For an even sportier ride, consider searching for an X4 with the optional Dynamic Handling package. This package enhances the suspension without sacrificing ride comfort.

What Needs Improvement

Reduced rear passenger and cargo space: The X4's sloping roofline adds a touch of sportiness to its appearance, but it also reduces headroom and legroom by about an inch compared to the BMW X3. The X4 also has a smaller cargo capacity of 18.5 cubic feet, compared to the X3's 28.7 cubic feet. While this reduction in space may be noticeable, it's likely adequate for most people's needs.
