First generation Fiat 124 Spider
Part of Fiat's re-entry into the North American market was the revived 124 Spider. Using the same name as Fiat's popular sports car of the 1960s through the mid-1980s, and with some distinct styling cues borrowed from that classic, the new car was an attempt to rekindle the old flame of affordable Italian sports cars while offering modern-day quality. Fiat partnered with Mazda to build the 124 Spider using the same platform as the MX-5 Miata, but with different bodywork, engines and transmissions.
The 124 Spider uses Fiat's 1.4-liter turbocharged MultiAir engine, paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. A special Abarth trim level doesn't raise engine output much, though it provides a sporty interior and a retuned suspension that tightens up ride and performance substantially. The more popular, higher-volume trim levels were called Classica (Classic) and Lusso (luxury).
