2019 Ford EcoSport is high on utility, low on performance and driver aids

The 2019 Ford EcoSport isn't the quickest or best-handling small SUV, and its limited driver aids puts it behind many competitors. Ford's smallest SUV does offer impressive passenger and cargo space, plus the effective SYNC® 3 technology interface as long as you get an SE or higher trim with a larger touchscreen display. The larger display on the SE and Titanium is 6.5 inches, while the SES has an 8-inch touchscreen. The EcoSport S, SE, and Titanium are powered by a 123-horsepower three-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive and a larger 166-hp engine available in all three trims. The sporty SES trim includes the more powerful engine and all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

The roomy interior and SYNC 3 system are pluses, but they're offset by the EcoSport's lack of power and slow acceleration, even with the larger four-cylinder engine. Fuel efficiency disappoints at an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined for the small engine and 25 mpg combined for the larger engine. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. A lack of advanced driver-assist tech, standard or optional, further hurts the EcoSport's case.

5 reasons to buy the 2019 Ford EcoSport

What We Like

Cargo space: With more than 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seat, and 50 cubic feet with that row folded down, the Ford EcoSport offers more utility than many competitors. A left-hinged tailgate helps for curbside cargo loading.

Passenger comfort: Supportive seats and a quiet cabin should keep passengers happy. The rear seat is raised to improve leg support and forward visibility. Passenger space is impressive for a subcompact SUV, but taller passengers will feel cramped in the second row.

Technology: The larger 6.5- and 8-inch displays use Ford's user-friendly SYNC 3 system and a wide array of useful features for navigation, audio streaming, and connected services. Primary controls are intuitive and easy to use. Voice control is included for easier hands-free interaction. They’re good reasons to avoid the standard 4.2-inch display screen, which also lacks Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto.

What Needs Improvement

Driving: Between its meager power and unrefined drivetrain the 2019 Ford EcoSport doesn't meet the standards of the small SUV category. That lack of power should translate into higher fuel efficiency, but it doesn't. The EcoSport is also missing basic driver aids like forward collision warning and lane departure warning; they are neither standard nor optional. It does offer blind-spot warning, which is a good thing because the EcoSport's thick roof pillars hinder visibility.
