A beast of a body-on-frame full-size SUV, the Ford Expedition is a solid choice for families who tow and travel together. For anyone else, it’s likely too big and too thirsty to make a smart daily driver. Powered by a choice of powerful and more powerful turbocharged V6 engines, and offered in big and bigger sizes, and it can seat up to eight.

Fifth generation Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition sticks with a familiar formula for its redesigned fifth generation. It still has big and bold styling, powerful engines, lots of space, excellent towing capability, and slightly better fuel economy. The new design builds off the last version, and the biggest changes are a split tailgate that folds both up and down and the massive display screen. Expedition and longer Expedition Max body styles return.

The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 also returns under the hood, but it now makes 400 horsepower in its base form, up from 380 hp, and 440 horsepower with a high-output version. A 10-speed automatic is the lone transmission, and buyers can choose rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case. A Tremor model replaces the Timberline in the lineup as the off-roader, and this version is more capable thanks to all-terrain tires, 10.6 inches of ground clearance, and more skid plates.

Inside, the Expedition continues to offer seating for up to eight, but the dash is rethought. Rather than a traditional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, Ford goes with a 24-inch display at the base of the windshield. That required making the steering wheel smaller and giving it a flat top and bottom so it’s easier to see over. The larger display is joined by a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Fourth generation Ford Expedition

Ford redesigned the Expedition for 2018 with an aluminum-intensive body a la the Ford F-150. 

The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 carried over but added 10 horsepower for a total of 375. It was also offered in a high-output version with 400 horsepower. A 440-horsepower version arrived for 2022. A 10-speed automatic transmission replaced the previous six-speed for this generation, and rear- or full-time four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case were offered. The FX4 model added a Terrain Management system to adjust the stability control for various types of surfaces. A Timberline off-road model debuted for 2022.

The max towing rating remained steady at 9,300 pounds

. Fuel economy was predictably poor with top EPA estimates of 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive

A 2022 refresh upgraded to a larger 15.5-inch touchscreen (up from eight inches) and introduced Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driver-assist system at the top of the lineup.

Third generation Ford Expedition

Ford redesigned the Expedition for the 2007 model year with a minor styling update and an available EL body style that had a 12-inch longer wheelbase and was 14.8 inches longer overall. The frame was stiffer and the Expedition continued with a four-wheel independent suspension, something competitive models from General Motors didn’t offer.

A 5.4-liter V8 continued as the lone engine and it was hooked to a six-speed automatic transmission that replaced a four-speed auto. The Expedition offered both rear- or full-time four-wheel drive featuring a two-speed transfer case. Towing capacity topped out at 9,200 pounds.

The Expedition offered seating for seven or eight people, as well as plentiful cargo space, especially in the EL models. Eddie Bauer and Limited trim levels continued at the top of the lineup, but the upscale King Ranch trim didn’t return until 2008.

RepairPal reports that the average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Ford Expedition is $678, compared to an average of $608 for Fullsize SUVs and $591 for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.

According to RepairPal, Ford Expedition owners bring their vehicles into a repair shop for unscheduled repairs an average of 1.6 times per year, compared to an average of 1.4 times for Fullsize SUVs and 1.3 times for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.

RepairPal reported that the probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 19% for the Ford Expedition, compared to an average of 18% for Fullsize SUVs and 14% for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.
