2025 - present
Third generation GMC Terrain
The new third-generation Terrain exclusively offers a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission when the Terrain is ordered with front-wheel drive or an eight-speed automatic transmission when all-wheel drive is specified. For the 2025 model year, only a single trim level was available. However, for 2026, GMC will bring back the AT4 off-road and Denali luxury trim levels. Other features to note in the third generation include a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, up to eight available camera views, 5G Wi-Fi data capability, and anti-icing windshield wipers.

Second generation GMC Terrain
In the second generation that started in 2018, GMC equipped the Terrain with several turbocharged four-cylinder engine choices, including a short-lived diesel option. Gasoline engines were available in 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter sizes. Gas engines were paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel engine was paired with a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive was standard and all-wheel drive was optional.
Notable in the second-generation Terrain is a fold-flat front passenger seat, allowing owners to place items up to eight feet long in the cabin and close the rear hatch. This generation offers a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ as well as several USB ports. The top Denali trim represents the highest luxury level offered across the GMC model line. Available driver-assistance features included adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera system, and automatic pedestrian braking.

First generation GMC Terrain
For the first generation beginning in 2010, Terrain buyers were offered a choice between a non-turbocharged four-cylinder or a more powerful V6 engine. Both engines were paired with six-speed automatic transmissions, and all-wheel drive was available. From the beginning of production, the GMC Terrain came equipped with a backup camera, a multi-function audio system with USB port access, an adjustable rear seat, and four-wheel disc brakes. The top Denali luxury trim level was introduced for the 2013 model year, bringing a new level of comfort and tech features to the Terrain model.
The first-generation Terrain received a midcycle refresh for 2016 with new bodywork and interior features, which were carried through 2017 before the second generation made its debut. In 2017, buyers could also purchase the Terrain Nightfall special edition with black and charcoal exterior trim.
