The 2023 Hyundai Nexo offers long range and fast refueling compared to EVs
The Hyundai Nexo is a compact SUV and one of the few hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road today. It uses a fuel cell to convert the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity that runs an electric motor. At the tailpipe, you'll only see water vapor, as opposed to the exhaust smoke from a gas-powered vehicle. The driving range will vary depending on the trim level. The entry Blue trim has an EPA-estimated 380 miles of range, while the Limited trim has an estimated range of 354 miles due to larger wheels and the weight of its added features. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov.
The Nexo is about the size of its Hyundai Tucson sibling. As the only hydrogen SUV on the road, its closest competitors are the Toyota Mirai and the Honda Clarity fuel cell sedans. Aside from those two, other competitors would be fully electric vehicles. Hyundai hasn't changed the Nexo much since it debuted for the 2019 model year aside from adding a larger touchscreen for 2021. Highlights include excellent cargo capacity, a comfortable ride, and confident cornering abilities.

What We Like
Great range and refuel time: Over 350 miles of EPA-estimated range
is impressive compared to the driving distances offered by many modern electric vehicles. When you consider a refuel time of less than 10 minutes versus many hours charging an EV, the convenience of the Nexo's design philosophy starts to become apparent.Utility: As the only hydrogen-powered SUV on the road, the Nexo offers roughly double the cargo capacity of its sedan competitors. As an SUV, it also offers a higher driving position and better legroom for the rear passengers.
Easy to drive: The Nexo offers a pleasant driving experience thanks to quick acceleration from stops and it is able to handle corners and winding roads with ease. It's the sort of vehicle that drives smaller than its size would suggest. In the city, it can easily fit into tight parking spaces and zip in between small openings in traffic.
What Needs Improvement
Hydrogen infrastructure: It's worth noting that while hydrogen fuel cell technology offers impressive benefits, the infrastructure is not as established as electric vehicle charging stations. Currently, nearly all of the hydrogen fueling stations are located in California. Similarly, the availability of the hydrogen fuel itself can be hit-or-miss at some stations.
