2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe brings electrification to off-roading
There are few vehicles in the world as recognizable as a Jeep Wrangler. With roots dating back to the 1940s, the Wrangler and its predecessors have defined off-road vehicles for generations. In 2023, the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid was in its second year of production and was among the most popular styles for the Wrangler.
The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid has a larger battery pack than a standard hybrid. The EPA estimates there’s enough battery power to drive the Wrangler about 22 miles before you have to use any gasoline at all, but you have to plug it in to charge the battery. Luckily, you can charge this plug-in hybrid overnight on an ordinary household electrical outlet. Range figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new and assume a full battery charge. Range will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.
A Jeep Wrangler is meant to be an off-road vehicle, and that’s where the Wrangler 4xe excels. You can drive one of these hybrids anywhere another Jeep can go, and when you’re out of electricity, the gasoline engine kicks in with plenty of power.
Competitor vehicles for the Wrangler 4xe include the Ford Bronco and Land Rover Defender.

What We Like
Off-road capability: If you buy any Wrangler, the expectation is that you will want to take it off-road. That’s what it’s built for and the Wrangler 4xe does that very well. You can scramble up steep grades on gravel, dirt, or mud and climb over rocks and logs with ease. There’s no better vehicle for that than a Wrangler, and the plug-in hybrid drivetrain works well under all conditions
Plug-in hybrid drivetrain: With the 4xe you can expect about 22 miles of all-electric range before the gasoline engine kicks in and the Wrangler starts behaving like a regular hybrid.
Combined, the electric motor and four-cylinder gas engine pack 375 horsepower and an impressive 470 lb-ft of torque. That’s great performance on the road or on the trail.Room for five people: The Wrangler 4xe is only offered on the long-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited platform, so there’s ample room for three adults in the back seat. That means you can take your friends on your adventures and still have room for a picnic in the storage area in the back.
What Needs Improvement
Fuel economy: When your 22 miles of electric range are over, the 4xe gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in combined city and highway driving. That’s the same as the basic V6 Wrangler and 2 mpg less than the Wrangler with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder on its own.
So it’s important to use the charger whenever possible to get the electric benefit of the 4xe.Shop with your budget in mind
