One of the more fun-to-drive three-row SUVs on the market, the Mazda CX-90 features sporty styling, a choice of powerful engines, and a premium cabin. There’s standard seating for up to eight passengers, with the option of second-row captain’s chairs dropping the total to seven. Seats are comfortable, but the rear two rows aren’t quite as spacious as some of its rivals. A 10.25-inch infotainment display is standard with the option of a larger 12.3-inch unit, but interaction is via the center controller—the touchscreen only operates with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.

First generation Mazda CX-90

When the CX-90 arrived last year, it replaced the aging CX-9 as Mazda’s flagship SUV. With three rows of seating and a stylish new design, the CX-90 was similar in size to its predecessor, but with a longer wheelbase and wider stance, the new model had improved interior space. While the first and second rows have sufficient legroom, third-row passengers will find the space cramped, especially for adults. That third-row space may be better used by folding the seats to extend the cargo area.

The CX-90 is powered by a turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine producing 280 horsepower in most trims; however, output bumps up to 340 horsepower in the Turbo S. Mazda also offers the CX-90 as a plug-in hybrid, which we review separately. A quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is all-wheel drive, and with a responsive throttle and firm suspension, the Mazda is quite enjoyable to drive. Adding to its utility, the CX-90 can tow as much as 5,000 pounds when properly equipped
