2024 Mitsubishi Mirage review

The 2024 model year was the final curtain for the Mitsubishi Mirage, the Japanese brand’s compact hatchback. One of the lowest-priced new vehicles on the market, the Mirage was a perfect example of “you get what you pay for.” Under the hood is a tiny three-cylinder engine, and while it is relatively fuel-efficient, it is one of the lowest-powered motors in a new car—with performance to match. The cabin is quite basic, with hard plastics on most surfaces and a seven-inch infotainment display that feels dated, though it does redeem itself to some extent with standard Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®.

Fifth generation Mitsubishi Mirage

One of the most basic new cars in America, the compact Mirage arrived in 2014 following a twelve-year absence from the market. The small hatchback offered reasonable passenger space, although its rear seat didn’t have much padding and would be cramped for two adults. Cargo space was on par with the competition, expanding to a plentiful 47 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. But the interior felt cheap with most surfaces trimmed in hard plastic, and the ride was unrefined due to considerable road and engine noise.

One of the reasons for the engine noise is the tiny 1.2-liter three-cylinder powerplant, which had to work hard under almost all driving situations. While it was fuel-efficient, achieving an EPA-estimated 39 mpg combined

with the continuously variable transmission, its 74-horsepower output was among the lowest for a new car. The Mirage’s small size made it easy to maneuver; however, driving it on a winding road was not rewarding.
