2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is an affordable, efficient compact crossover

2023 was the first year for Toyota's Corolla Cross Hybrid compact crossover SUV. The Corolla Cross is smaller than Toyota’s super-popular compact RAV4 but larger than the subcompact C-HR crossover. Toyota calls this SUV the Corolla Cross because the Corolla name has always represented Toyota’s entry-level offering, and this is an entry-level hybrid SUV.

The EPA estimates the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid will return up to 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving and up to 45 mpg under the best highway conditions. This is a big increase over the all-wheel-drive version of the standard Corolla Cross, which gets 30 mpg combined. Notably, the hybrid powertrain is also more powerful than its non-hybrid sibling and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid is compact but reasonably spacious and comfortable inside. This SUV also comes with a good selection of driver-assistance technology, including adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance.

5 reasons to buy the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

What We Like

  • Fuel economy: With combined fuel economy of up to 42 mpg, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is one of the most efficient compact crossover SUVs on the market. The EPA estimates it gets 45 mpg in highway driving and 38 mpg in city driving.

  • Comfortable: The front seats offer good space and comfort. While the rear seats are cramped, it's better to categorize the Corolla Cross Hybrid as a two-seat vehicle with the capability to carry four rather than a true four- or five-passenger vehicle. The air conditioning works well to cool the cabin on hot days.

  • Spacious cargo area: Because of its battery pack, the Corolla Cross Hybrid offers 21.5 cubic feet of space, compared to about 25 cubic feet in the non-hybrid version. Still, that amounts to about 27 bags of groceries or a serious haul from a big-box store. Alternately, it's enough to carry a full load of camping or activity gear for the weekend.

What Needs Improvement

  • Road noise: There's a noticeable level of road noise that enters the cabin at highway speeds. Also, the climate control fan on full blast is very noisy. The Corolla Cross Hybrid's light weight also contributes to a bouncy ride that creates tire noise.
