2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback delivers utility and value

For the past 50 years, the basic economy car has been a hatchback. There's a good reason for the design's enduring popularity: convenience. Beyond being affordable and convenient, the 2023 Corolla Hatchback now also has a suite of driver aids as standard equipment. This suite of advanced driver-assistance features includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane keeping assistance, and automatic high beam control. The top XSE trim adds comfort features like blind-spot monitoring, heated seats, wireless charging pad, and a JBL audio system.

  • The Nightshade trim has been discontinued for 2023.
  • Corolla Hatchback trims have been upgraded with JBL Sound System as standard equipment this year.

What We Like 

  • Hatchback convenience: Hatchbacks offer the utility and cargo capacity of a small SUV at a more attractive price point and generally with better fuel economy. The Corolla Hatchback gives you great access to the cargo area and plenty of space. 

  • Confident handling: As a small car, the Corolla Hatchback is easy to drive in an urban setting and easy to park. The Corolla Hatchback is also fun to drive wherever you go, with responsive steering and the low weight of a small car. 

  • Standard tech features: One of the best reasons to buy a Toyota is the package of advanced driver-assistance technology. It includes features like adaptive cruise control, which follows the speed of the car ahead of you. That's typically found only on much more expensive premium models. 

What Needs Improvement 

  • Engine power: As an economy car, the Corolla Hatchback has a modest engine. It wasn't made to be a sports car, and drivers may be frustrated by the slow acceleration and limited passing abilities.
