Volkswagen GTI

When it introduced the redesigned eighth-generation GTI in 2022, Volkswagen assured customers that this legendary model would carry on where its predecessor left off, and it didn’t disappoint. While it shared the same wheelbase as the previous generation, it was longer and wider, which gave the hot hatch a more aggressive stance. The eighth-gen GTI was available in S, SE, and Autobahn trims from the start, and all came standard with Android Auto™/Apple CarPlay®, the digital driver's display, and an 8.25-inch touchscreen, which increased to 12.9 inches in 2025 when a new infotainment system was introduced. 

Powering the VW GTI is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivering 241 horsepower to the front wheels. Adding to its performance chops were a limited-slip differential and sport-tuned suspension, and initially, a six-speed manual gearbox was standard. However, the manual was discontinued in 2025, leaving the quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

While the seventh-generation Volkswagen GTI stayed true to its roots, the hot hatch received a significant update when it arrived in 2015. It may have been larger than its predecessor, but the new GTI was lighter, quicker, and more fuel-efficient. The seventh-gen GTI was the first model in America to be built on Volkswagen's new MQB global platform, which made it stronger and more rigid, improving driving dynamics and ride comfort. Three trims were available: The S and SE were offered as two- or four-door models, while the top-level Autobahn came exclusively as a four-door. The two-door version was discontinued in 2017. Volkswagen also offered a special Rabbit edition in 2019 that came with a range of higher-end features. 

Like all GTIs before it, the seventh-gen GTI was front-wheel drive, and since 1997, there’s been a turbocharged engine under the hood. The GTI's 2.0-liter turbo engine delivered up to 220 horsepower with a standard six-speed manual gearbox, bumping up to 228 in 2019.
