Generation Overview

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is part of the full-size pickup truck model's third generation of production (2014-2018). The release of this generation brought on some significant updates from the previous generation, including completely revised suspension tuning for a smoother ride and new available driver-assistance features, such as forward-collision warning and a lane-departure warning system on some trims.

For the 2016 Sierra 1500, Xenon headlights and LED running lights also become standard equipment, and a new seven-inch touchscreen display with both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are standard on some trims.

GMC Sierra 1500 Engine Options

The standard engine on the third-generation Sierra 1500 (2014-2018) is a brawny 4.3L V6 at 285 hp. This engine is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, although a four-wheel drive system is optional.

Two V8 engines are also available on some trims; a 5.3L V8 at 355 hp is standard on the SLT and Denali but can be added to other trims, while a 6.2L V8 at 420 hp is optional on the SLT and Denali only.

GMC Sierra 1500 Cab and Bed Sizes

The third-generation Sierra 1500 is available in three different cab sizes and three bed sizes. A regular cab is standard and features a front bench seat for up to three passengers. Meanwhile, the double cab adds a rear row to extend seating to five people. The largest cab, the crew cab, can seat up to six people with front and rear bench seats.

Three bed sizes are also offered: a five-foot-eight-inch short bed, a 6.5-foot standard bed, and an eight-foot long bed.
