Generation Overview

Think about the word “rally car” and chances are an image of the Subaru WRX comes to mind. Formerly sold under the Impreza banner until the 2015 model year, the WRX serves as the closest most car shoppers will get to a genuine WRC rally car. Changes for the 2018 model year were relatively modest on the surface, with only a few cosmetic tweaks to the front and rear fascia. However, the 2018 Subaru WRX touts a revised suspension with improvements to both handling and ride comfort, along with a new-for-2018 Performance Package. Every 2018 Subaru WRX comes standard with Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system.

As far as trim levels go, you’ll encounter five of them when shopping for the 2018 Subaru WRX: base, Premium, Limited, STI and STI Limited. The base WRX is a well-equipped machine that offers cloth seating, a six-speaker audio system with 6.2-inch touchscreen display and rearview camera, heated side mirrors and available SiriusXM® satellite radio.1 The Premium upgrades the base trim’s 17-inch alloys for 18-inch wheels while adding a larger seven-inch touchscreen, heated front seats and a power moonroof. You’ll also get windshield washer deicers as part of the available All-Weather Package. There’s also a Performance Package that adds Recaro® front seats with eight-way driver adjustment, performance-grade front brake pads and red painted brake calipers.

The last pure WRX trim of the trio, the Limited, adds LED headlights that steer as you corner for better light coverage, along with LED fog lights, leather seats and a 10-way power driver’s seat. You’ll also get the EyeSight suite of driver assist features as an option. All three WRX trims rely on a 268-hp 2.0L turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine for motivation.

Choosing the 2018 Subaru WRX STI unleashes a larger 2.5L version of the turbocharged boxer four-cylinder engine, this time rated at a healthy 305 hp. The base STI trim gives you an upgraded AWD system with a driver-controlled center differential for added performance. Other highlights include a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission, front and rear limited-slip differentials and 19-inch alloy wheels, along with the iconic STI trunk-mounted spoiler. The STI Limited lets you choose between the standard STI spoiler or a lower-profile version. The Recaro seats from the WRX Premium’s Performance Package also make their way to the STI Limited. Highlighted features also include navigation, keyless entry, push button start and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon® premium audio system.
