You cannot do this safely while driving at the same time. Instead, you have to have your passenger change the driving mode. In my other PHEV car, it is relatively easy to do. There's a simple button on the center column that you just push to switch to the driving mode that you want to be in. You don't need to take your eyes off the road to change while driving. Or if you do, it's only briefly. I am also a little bit miffed that they call the electric mode 'pure' as opposed to simply all electric.
