The 2018 Audi A7 offers a compelling blend of style, luxury, and cargo space

The 2018 Audi A7 takes the blueprint of the A6 luxury sedan but substitutes its traditional four-door design for an attractive coupe-like shape with a convenient hatchback trunk. For the 2018 model year, the A7 gets a slight horsepower boost from its supercharged V6. Power goes through an eight-speed automatic to standard all-wheel drive. There’s plenty of power, and the ride is extremely well balanced during all types of driving conditions, although models with the larger alloy wheels have a notably firmer ride.

Available in two trim levels, Premium Plus and Prestige, standard features include an eight-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, power liftgate, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

One sacrifice to be made for the A7’s debonair style is that there’s less rear headroom than what you get in the more upright A6. That being said, the A7 has the edge when it comes to cargo space. Not only is the trunk commodious, the upward-swinging hatchback (Audi calls this a “Sportback”) makes loading cargo a breeze.

5 reasons to buy the 2018 Audi A7

What We Like

Supercharged V6: The base 3.0-liter supercharged V6 gets a slight bump in output for the 2018 model year, from 333 to 340 horsepower. This engine is refined and delivers plenty of thrust for seamless highway passing maneuvers, or while dicing with city traffic.

Standard all-wheel drive: It might have racy looks, but the A7 isn’t a fair-weather friend when Mother Nature gets grumpy. With its standard all-wheel drive, the A7 is practical and doesn’t wilt when the road ahead is slick with rain, ice, or snow.

Trunk volume: With the push of a button, the A7’s power-operated liftgate opens, revealing nearly 25 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s significantly more than most other midsize luxury sedans, including Audi’s own A6.

What Needs Improvement

Rear headroom: Unfortunately, style demands a sacrifice, and in this case it’s rear seat headroom. There’s no denying the ample cargo space, but the sweeping roofline that comes with the A7 cuts into the rear headroom. If you carry tall passengers in the rear, the more traditionally styled A6 might be a better choice.
