Style and practicality combine in the 2019 Audi A7

Like the A6 sedan it’s based on, the Audi A7 is redesigned for the 2019 model year. The exterior styling is slightly sharper and more angular than the outgoing model, while the updated cabin features a dual-screen infotainment system using Audi’s latest MMI® interface. With its coupe-like shape and tapered roof, the A7 serves as a sportier alternative to more traditional luxury sedans — including the A6 — along with premium SUVs with two rows of seating.

Getting the 2019 A7 down the road is a turbocharged V6 engine mated to a mild hybrid system. The engine delivers a satisfying blend of potent acceleration and reasonable fuel economy. All-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission are standard on all three A7 trim levels (Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige).

Audi sweated the details on the high-quality materials and finish of the interior. Unfortunately, although the new infotainment system’s dual-screen arrangement is attractive and features high-res graphics, the menus are confusing and distracting for a driver trying to focus on the road.

What We Like

Driving manners: The turbo V6 is the same engine found in the similarly updated A6, and we’re fans of it in each Audi sedan. Acceleration is strong, the ride is smooth, and the steering makes the A7 a delight to drive on curvy roads.

Standard features: The A7 comes with a strong lineup of tech and comfort touches. Standard in the base Premium model are features like Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, a 10-speaker stereo, heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, leather seating surfaces, and a panoramic sunroof.

Cargo space: Despite its sportier take on a luxury sedan, the A7 is remarkably good at toting lots of luggage. The power liftgate opens wide to reveal nearly 25 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 40/20/40-split folding rear seatback.

What Needs Improvement

Infotainment menus: Audi would be smart to streamline the menus found in the A7’s updated dual-screen infotainment system. Voice controls and smartphone connectivity help, though the fact remains this interface needs simplification.
