The 2021 Audi A7 is a compelling blend of luxury and practicality
The 2021 Audi A7 hides a surprisingly practical side to its personality beneath a sporty exterior that gives this midsize luxury sedan loads of head-turning appeal. It's mechanically similar to the Audi A6, and the key difference is the A7’s tapering tail with a trunk accessed via a large hatchback. This provides the A7 with a wide, low, and expansive cargo area measuring about 25 cubic feet in capacity.
There’s much more to the A7 than load-lugging capability, of course. New for 2021 is an optional plug-in hybrid powertrain that provides slightly more power than the standard engine, but with an EPA-estimated 24 miles of electric-only driving. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info. That standard engine is a turbocharged V6 coupled to a mild hybrid system, all-wheel drive, and seven-speed automatic. Performance is excellent with either engine, and the handling makes the A7 a delight to drive.
The spacious and high-quality cabin is another plus point. Headroom is a little snug in the second row, however, and the dual-screen interface on the dashboard has a learning curve.

What We Like
Standard all-wheel drive: We appreciate that its standard all-wheel drive gives this sport sedan the grip to handle all sorts of slippery road conditions. Even in dry conditions, Audi’s all-wheel-drive system is tuned to maximize traction and power delivery for better handling.
Trunk volume: You wouldn’t imagine the A7’s sleek shape would lend itself so nicely to carrying lots of luggage. It’s true, the trunk is large and the power-operated hatchback (or “Sportback,” to use Audi’s terminology) makes it simple to access the space back there.
Tech features: Even the base A7 comes with a long roster of standard tech, comfort, and driver-assist features. Among many others, these include leather seating, tri-zone climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay®, wired Android Auto™, sunroof, and satellite radio.
What Needs Improvement
Infotainment controls: The dual-screen interface in the center of the A7’s dashboard is overly complicated and distracting. Sure, it looks fresh and modern. But Audi would be wise to simplify the menus to make it all more user-friendly.
