The 2023 BMW iX is the German brand’s powerful all-electric midsize SUV.
The BMW iX is the German brand’s first fully electric SUV. Introduced for the 2022 model year, the iX is about the same size as the X5 but gets a more spacious interior thanks to the efficient packaging of the electric powertrain. The iX has a polarizing exterior design with a unique take on the iconic BMW kidney grille and the slimmest LED headlights the company has ever put on a production vehicle. For 2023 BMW added the more powerful 610-horsepower iX M60 to the lineup. The xDrive50 and new M60 both deliver impressive levels of power, range, and performance. Both variants feature dual electric motors with all-wheel drive that can vary torque front and rear as needed, and the driving experience is as good as, if not better than, other high-performance BMWs. The competitive set of performance electric SUVs is still small, but the iX competes against models like the Audi e-tron, Tesla Model X, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, and Rivian R1S.

What We Like
Performance: BMWs have a well-deserved reputation for excellent driving dynamics, and the iX is no exception. With the electric powertrain’s high torque and excellent grip of the dual-motor drive system, the iX launches off the line quickly with no wheelspin. The batteries mounted low in the floor keep the center of gravity low for better overall handling. According to the EPA, the iX xDrive50 can travel 324 miles on a full charge – during the Edmunds road test, the IX delivered an impressive 377 miles on a single charge.
Technology: The BMW iX displays all driver and infotainment information on one large curved display that seems to float above the dashboard. Haptic buttons integrated into the center console add to the futuristic feel of the iX’s cabin. BMW equips the iX with the latest advanced driver assist features, including Highway Assist Plus, which allows for limited hands-free driving.
Interior: While the cabin has a futuristic, high-tech vibe, the front seats are large and stylish, with good support as well as heating and cooling functionality. The rear seats are equally comfortable, with plentiful legroom and headroom for all three seating positions. There’s good cargo space behind the rear seats, and the split-configuration seats can be folded for added versatility.
What Needs Improvement
Value: The 2023 BMW iX is an impressive automobile with excellent performance, a roomy interior, and good utility, but it isn’t cheap. Prices start in the mid-$80,000s and easily flow into triple-digit figures. Some may decide it is worth the price of entry, but for many, a less expensive option like the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Kia EV6 might be more palatable.
