Fifth generation GMC Yukon
The updates that came with the introduction of the fifth-generation GMC Yukon in 2021 were among the most significant this full-size SUV had ever received. Completely redesigned, the updated model was larger than its predecessor and built on an all-new platform offering the Yukon’s first use of an independent rear suspension. Not only did this improve the ride and handling, but the new design created more interior space for a roomier cabin, especially noticeable for third-row passengers.
The 2021 GMC Yukon arrived with three engine options, including a powerful 6.2-liter 420-horsepower V8 and a new 3.0-liter diesel powerplant, and the same powertrain options continue to the current model year. A 10-speed automatic transmission comes on all Yukons, with standard rear-wheel drive except for the off-road-ready AT4, which comes exclusively with four-wheel drive. In addition to the new suspension, some Yukon models come with an air suspension that can adjust the ride height by up to four inches.

Fourth generation GMC Yukon
When GMC introduced the fourth-generation Yukon in 2015, the design was meant to help distinguish it from its Chevrolet and Cadillac siblings, and to that end, it was successful. Other improvements included a third-row seat that folds flat into the floor and available power-folding rear seats. An eight-inch touchscreen was standard with tri-zone automatic climate control, and the Yukon got Apple CarPlay® connectivity in 2016. Advanced driver-assist features like forward collision warning and lane departure warning were available at launch, and in 2017, the big SUV offered a low-speed automatic emergency braking system.
Engines carried over from the previous generation, but both the 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 came with higher power output and improved fuel economy. A six-speed automatic transmission was standard, but in 2018, the top-end Denali got a new 10-speed automatic paired with the 6.2-liter V8.
