The 2021 BMW M8 Gran Coupe is one of the world’s most powerful and dynamic four-doors
Blessed with striking good looks and stunning performance, the 2021 BMW M8 Gran Coupe represents the pinnacle of sedan performance from BMW. The M8 is powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine paired with an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel drive, and the suspension has been tuned to maximize every last bit of horsepower and grip possible. The BMW M8 Gran Coupe holds its own against competition like the Audi RS 7, Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S sedan and Porsche Panamera Turbo S, and nobody could ever accuse those cars of being slouches in the performance department.
Yet the M8 is perfectly livable on a day-to-day basis. While the suspension is firm, it’s not so harsh to make daily driving unreasonable. The interior is awash in premium materials and trim, never failing to remind the driver that this is a high-end luxury car. The rear seat is roomy enough for two passengers, and there’s even decent trunk space. Among the few downsides are the infotainment system’s steep learning curve, and poor fuel economy that’s not surprising for a car like this.

What We Like
Performance: Any BMW with an “M” in its name is focused on performance, and the 2021 M8 Gran Coupe is no exception. Its engine puts out 600 horsepower, or 617 when equipped with the Competition package. Then there’s the slick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, the standard all-wheel drive, the sport-tuned suspension, the brakes, and the steering…put it all together and the M8 Gran Coupe is simply stunning to drive.
Luxury: In the case of the M8 Gran Coupe, luxury means so much more than a long list of features. To be sure, it has that, from leather seats and powerful climate control to a premium audio system, and pretty much everything else you’d want or expect. But part of luxury car ownership is that feeling of exclusivity that comes with it, and there are few cars that feel more special than this striking looking and driving four-door.
Practicality: The M8 Gran Coupe is no substitute for an SUV, but considering its sleek roofline and high performance, it’s actually a reasonable daily driver. The suspension is tuned to smooth out sharper bumps on the road, there is a ton of legroom, and even headroom is good considering the low roofline.
What Needs Improvement
Fuel Economy: With an EPA-estimated 17 mpg combined rating, the M8 Gran Coupe is not exactly stingy on its fuel consumption.
While that’s not unexpected considering the performance of its twin-turbo V8 engine, it’s getting harder to dismiss considering there are electric cars that can out-accelerate the M8 while burning zero gallons of gas.Shop with your budget in mind
