First generation Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
Before Hyundai introduced its current lineup of Ioniq electric vehicles (Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 9), the South Korean brand launched the Ioniq name on a compact hatchback in 2017. The Ioniq Hybrid (the plug-in hybrid variant and electric variants are covered separately) was designed with a focus on fuel economy, and with an EPA combined estimate of 58 mpg
, it boasted the highest fuel economy in America for a vehicle without a plug. The Ioniq Hybrid wore that fuel economy crown for its entire six-year run. While the hybrid powertrain didn’t deliver much power, its six-speed dual-clutch transmission and multi-link rear suspension made the Ioniq Hybrid reasonably engaging to drive.Advanced driver-assist features were available when the Ioniq arrived in 2017, but most of them weren’t standard. In 2020, Hyundai added adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, and lane-keeping assistance to the standard equipment list. The front seats offered roomy space, although they weren’t very supportive, and the rear seat felt a bit cramped, especially for taller passengers.
