Fourth generation Kia Rio
The fourth-generation Kia Rio arrived with more body creases, improved technology, and automatic emergency braking for the first time. It continued as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback with front-wheel drive.
A 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine returned for this generation. This time Kia tweaked it by removing a little power but making it more responsive from stoplight to stoplight. Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions carried over. For 2020, a new 1.6-liter four-cylinder had less power, but it was teamed exclusively with a continuously variable automatic transmission, and together the duo offered 36 mpg combined.
Inside, buyers had the choice of a five- or seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, the latter with navigation and Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. An eight-inch screen became available for 2021, when the smartphone mirroring apps went wireless.
This generation added automatic emergency braking for the first time, and a rearview camera became standard for 2019 when it was required by law. No other driver-assist features were offered.

Third generation Kia Rio
The subcompact Rio returned for its third generation with a more wedge-like shape for both its four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles and a starting price around $15,000.
Kia offered only one engine, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with direct injection and modest power to match the modest pricing. Six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions were offered, though the hatchback lost the manual for the 2016 model year. Fuel economy was a selling point, as the Rio returned ratings up to 31 mpg combined by the final year of this generation, but the rival Honda Fit could get 36 mpg combined.
The interior was small but cozy, and buyers could opt for a seven-inch touchscreen with navigation. Driver-assist features were notably lacking for this generation. A rearview camera was never standard, but it was available.
