The 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman is a compact and sporty SUV alternative
Mini Coopers are easily some of the most charming and playful vehicles on the road. Their style is inspired by the original Minis from the 1960s and they’re well known for delivering an abundance of performance. But let’s face facts: The tiny hatchback models are very limited when it comes to practicality. That’s where the 2023 Mini Cooper Countryman comes in.
The Countryman is Mini’s largest vehicle, but as a subcompact, it’s one of the smaller SUVs on the market. It provides much more space for rear passengers and cargo than the four-door hatchback, but it's still not as accommodating as larger SUVs. The Countryman makes up for that with its personality and sporty handling.
For 2023, an Untamed Edition debuted with distinctive styling flourishes. At the bottom of the lineup, the base Cooper and Classic models were discontinued partway through the year.

What We Like
Numerous engine choices: Whether you’re looking for a pleasant commuter or something to tear up your favorite canyon road, it seems there’s a Countryman model to fit your desires and budget. The base three-cylinder engine is adequate, while the Cooper S and John Cooper Works dramatically increase power output. There’s even a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which we reviewed separately.
Endearing style and personality: Every vehicle in the Mini lineup pulls inspiration from the tiny and charming Minis from the 1960s. They’re instantly recognizable as coming from the same brand, and the Countryman simply upscales its distinct personality. The interiors have retro-cool touches, with large round gauges and big toggle switches that underscore its playful demeanor.
More engaging to drive than its rivals: In addition to the Countryman’s plucky character, it has plenty of performance to match. Power and acceleration vary with which engine you choose, from the mild base model to the raucous JCW. The Countryman really shines on a fun twisty road. It is as responsive and confident as smaller Minis when cornering and reaches new levels with the JCW’s sport suspension.
What Needs Improvement
Limited cargo capacity: The Mini Cooper Countryman is distinct for its compact proportions, but that also translates to reduced interior space. Thankfully, there’s adequate room for adult passengers in the rear seats, but the cargo capacity takes a big hit. It holds just 17.6 cubic feet (about 22 grocery bags), which is closer to what you’d get in a midsize sedan. Other SUVs in the class can accommodate 20 to 24 cubic feet.
