The 2016 Tesla Model X is an advanced electric luxury SUV with impressive performance
Banking on the success of the Model S electric luxury sedan, Tesla added the Model X SUV for the 2016 model year. While electric vehicles were becoming more prevalent, the Model X was the only fully electric SUV on the market at the time. With styling similar to its Model S sibling, the Model X stands out with its unique articulating rear falcon-wing doors, allowing easy access to the rear seat, as long as there isn’t a low ceiling overhead.
The 2016 Tesla Model X trims are based on power output, ranging from the base 75D to the P90D. All Model X trims feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, and all deliver impressive acceleration as well as a driving range that almost eliminates the dreaded range anxiety. While the Model X was the sole electric SUV in 2016, competitors with electrified hybrid powertrains included the Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90, and BMW X5.

What We Like
Performance: Midsize crossover SUVs are not typically known for their performance, but the Model X defies that expectation with impressive power at all trim levels. The base 75D puts out 328 horsepower, while the top-level P90D with the optional Ludicrous mode bumps up to 532 horsepower, which moves this SUV to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. The Model X electric driving range is also quite good, delivering as much as 257 miles in the P90D.
Technology: The Tesla Model X includes a hospital-grade air filtration system as well as a long list of advanced driver-assistance features. Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and park assist are standard features, and the Model X has a summon feature that will remotely move the vehicle out of a parking space or garage. Some Model X models have Tesla’s Autopilot, which uses adaptive cruise control and lane centering to enable semi-autonomous driving.
Interior: Like its Model S sibling, the Model X has almost no physical controls: All functions are accessed via the massive 17-inch touchscreen display. The system can be overwhelming, but it responds quickly and the interface can be configured for easier use. There’s a good amount of interior space, and it's bright thanks to the large panoramic glass windshield.
What Needs Improvement
Rear doors: The rear falcon-wing doors add to the futuristic style of the Tesla Model X, providing easy access to the cabin with a wide opening. However, they are power-operated and are slow to open or close, which can be frustrating. If you’re in a garage with a low ceiling, access to the back seat is very difficult. Because the roof is part of the door, the Model X cannot carry any cargo on its roof.
