Replacing the truck-based Ranier and minivan-based Rendezvous, the first generation of the Buick Enclave was launched in 2008. Based partially on the Centieme concept car from the 2003 Detroit Auto Show, the model made its debut at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as a concept car. Starting as a full-size crossover SUV, the second generation will be larger yet, to make room for the Buick Envision in the compact crossover SUV class. Though it's always been available with the 3.6L V6 engine, tinkering through the model years have brought it from 275 hp to 288 hp, with a top torque of 270 lb-ft. This was partially accomplished by creating a broader torque curve in the direct-injection engine. It has kept a unibody approach to construction throughout the first generation, and features significant cargo space for this type of approach. It included Buick's vintage VentiPorts in its styling, harking back to the manufacturer's styling roots in 1949. Initial sales of the model were strong enough that GM had to add a third shift at the factory to keep up with demand.
