About the 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Vehicle Summary

Introduced as a replacement for the Jeep Liberty, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee is a midsize crossover SUV that works well for singles, couples and small families. It features a wide range of available trims, packages and options, making it easy to find one that meets your needs, whether you need a vehicle for getting around town or a lightweight trail crawler. The range of engines and drivetrains take you from an EPA estimate of 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway for the two-wheel drive 2.4L inline-four engine to 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway for the four-wheel drive Trailhawk trim with the 3.2L V6 engine. 1 Unlike many rear bench seats which are simply stationary, the Cherokee's 60/40-fold-flat rear seat has six degrees of recline as well as several inches of movement forward and back, even including a unique in-seat hidden storage compartment to maximize your cargo space. The available UConnect® feature keeps you linked to your world. 2

1 Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov.

FAQ

Q: What are the different types of 2017 Jeep Cherokee?

A: The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is available in five different trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk and Overland. The base Sport trim includes a five-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth®, USB and auxiliary ports. Latitude ads a rearview camera, air conditioning, fog lights and alloy wheels. Limited ups the touchscreen size, adds heated front leather seats, dual-zone climate control and remote start.3 The Overland adds navigation, blind-spot monitoring, a nine-speaker Alpine stereo and ventilated front seats.

Q: What are the differences between the 2017 Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee?

A: With the smaller, 2.4L inline-four engine, the Cherokee is able to realize better fuel economy than the Grand Cherokee's smallest engine, a 3.6L V6. 1 Though the Grand Cherokee is roomier, the Cherokee provides a richer interior finish, more overall features and a wider range of upgrades to help keep you and your passengers comfortable while you're on the go.

Q: Is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee a four-wheel drive vehicle?

A: The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is available in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive drivetrains, which allows you to decide whether you'd like a more fuel-efficiency option for simply getting around town or a more robust option that can handle lightweight trails, rough weather and similar conditions.

Q: How many people does the 2017 Jeep Cherokee seat?

A: Because the 2017 Jeep Cherokee doesn't have a third-row seat, it is more limited than some other midsize crossover SUV options that are available on the market. With two front bucket seats and three seats on the rear bench seat, the maximum number of people the SUV can hold is five, though it provides plenty of room for those passengers.

3 Remote start functionality may require the purchase of a subscription plan and/or a compatible device like a smart phone. See the owner’s manual or manufacturer website for more information.

Generation Overview

Returning to the North American market as a midsize crossover SUV, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee was introduced in the 2013 New York International Auto Show. It had been replaced by the Jeep Liberty in prior generations, requiring a shift to from its compact SUV roots in prior generations, to the fifth generation's upgrade in size, creating a space for Jeep's Renegade model. Though the new design drew some criticism from reviewers at first, the new generation was a huge hit for the manufacturer, causing them to close down both the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 production lines in order to meet the strong demand for the vehicle. As of the 2017 model year, the mid-generation refresh and facelift was still a couple of years away for the 2019 model.
