2016 Jeep Wrangler Overview

An iconic symbol of a vehicle that is as much at home off the road as it is on it, the Jeep Wrangler also comes in other models such as the Sport S, Rubicon, and Sahara. This convertible SUV was also released in a number of limited edition models available for this year and include the Backcountry, Black Bear, Willys Wheeler, Rubicon Hard Rock, Freedom Edition, and a 75th Anniversary Edition.

2016 Jeep Wrangler History

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler has a deep history that has its roots in the trusted vehicles that became an icon of World War II. As such, it has one of the most recognizable designs in the entire industry. The late 1980s saw the Jeep Wrangler move from its ancient military roots to take its place on the roads of America. With three generations of Jeep Wranglers, each one was built upon its predecessors and continued to evolve.

The YJ was the first model released as a road-ready vehicle. Offered for purchase from 1987 until 1996, it is the only model that had rectangular headlights. With a choice of either four-or six-cylinder engines that were married with an automatic or manual transmission, several packages were also available, with the Renegade being especially popular.

The second generation included the release of the TJ model which featured improvements for handling, comfort, power, and fuel economy. This model was in production from 1997 until 2006 and featured the original soft-top, two-door styling that instantly announced that it was a Jeep.

Other changes that occurred during this generation include:

  • The rounded headlights that are found on the CJ models
  • A replacement of the three-speed automatic transmission, with one with four speeds
  • The 2003 production year saw the inclusion of a 2.4L, four-cylinder engine
  • 2003 also marks the year Jeep introduced its legendary Rubicon model, so named for the rugged trail when the car maker tests its models before releasing them to production

How It Drives

While the 2016 Jeep Wrangler is made to handle off-road experiences, it still provides a comfortable ride for its occupants inside.

Used 2016 Jeep Wrangler Value

According to Kelly Blue Book (KBB), the 2016 Jeep Wrangler has the lowest five-year cost-to-own for a vehicle in its class. KBB also awarded the vehicle second place in resale value for a midsize SUV/crossover.

Design & Performance

A Command-Trac Shift-on-the-fly, part-time, 4WD puts the power of a 2016 Jeep Wrangler in the hands of the driver, making it possible to improve fuel economy while driving on city roads. The four-wheel drive availability means that the Jeep Wrangler is ready to head off-road at a moment's notice, though. It's 16-inch styled steel wheels are standard as are the off-road tires. A full-size, matching spare tire means that Jeep Wrangler owners are ready for anything. Fog lamps and halogen headlamps cut the murky darkness as the SUV powers its way down the road. A front stabilizer bar, two front tow hooks, and one rear tow hook reinforce the image of the 2016 Jeep Wrangler as a no-nonsense vehicle that is ready for business anytime, anywhere.

Additional features include:

  • Electronic stability control
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation
  • Advanced Multistage Front Airbags
  • Sport bar with full padding
  • Traction control
  • Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System
  • Speed control

Powertrain & Engine

The standard engine available for the 2016 Jeep Wrangler is a 3.6L V6 that is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. An optional five-speed automatic transmission is also available. It has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. When that capacity is coupled with its standard trailer sway damping feature, the 2016 Jeep Wrangler is the ideal vehicle for adventures of all types. The EPA estimates that the vehicle gets 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg along the highway.

Body Style & Interior Comfort

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler offers an expansive storage space with rear seats that split 60/40 and fold flat. The center console features a bin that is both lockable and easy to access for secure storage for valuables. Other standard features include:

  • Cloth seats with adjustable head restraints
  • Reclining front seats
  • Low-back bucket seats
  • Cargo tie down loops
  • Air conditioning
  • Cargo compartment floor mat
  • 12-volt auxiliary power outlet
