Generation Overview

The 2019 Kia Optima represents the fourth generation of the brand’s midsize sedan offering that debuted back in 2016. The 2019 Optima’s athletic and energetic styling helps set it apart visually from its midsized rivals. Notable changes from the previous model year include a few tweaks to the exterior styling and improvements in the UVO infotainment and telematics system.

Trim choices for the 2019 Kia Optima start out with the base LX, which offers a long list of standard driver-assistive features including lane keeping assist and driver attention warning. The LX also features UVO link, which offers plenty of cool features including remote climate control, remote locking and unlocking, vehicle diagnostics and roadside assistance, when activated.1 The S trim builds upon the LX’s standard features while adding push button start, sport cloth seats, an upgrade from 16-inch alloys to 18-inch alloys and dual-zone automatic climate control. Both trims rely on the 2.4L inline-four that’s rated at 185 hp and an EPA-estimated 29 combined MPG.2

The EX trim not only gives you leather seating, available premium navigation, an available 10-speaker premium audio system by Harman Kardon® and heated front seats, but you’ll also get a 178-hp 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The trade-off in hp nets you improved fuel economy, as the 2019 Kia Optima in EX trim gives you an EPA-estimated 31 combined MPG.2 The SX trim adds everything offered on the EX while adding available Nappa leather trim, heated rear outboard seats and the Surround-View Monitor, which provides a 360-degree view of the vehicle on the eight-inch touchscreen.

If the thought of saving fuel gets your wheels turning, then you’ll be interested in the 2019 Optima’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The 2019 Kia Optima Hybrid combines its 2.0L inline-four with a 50-hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery to achieve an EPA-estimated 41 combined MPG.2 The 2019 Kia Optima Plug-in Hybrid uses the same basic setup, but with a slightly larger battery and more powerful electric motor, resulting in an EPA-estimated 103 combined MPGe (gas and electric) /40 combined MPG (hybrid mode).3
