With gas prices expecting to reach $4.00 a gallonI was looking for a vehicle that would be good on gas. But I didnt want a vehicle that I had to use a can opener to get into. I had driven several subcompact vehicles and while they all did okay on their fuel economy (on average 30mpg real driving condition not the manufacturers rating) the vehicles all suffer in ride, comfort and visibility. Some of the vehicles actually had me feeling unsafe next to the typical vehicles on the roads (your average SUV for example). I chose the Volkswagen Golf for its fuel economy, its safety features (dual, side, & head airbags, antilock brakes, stability control), its styling and yes its price. I would recommend this vehicle to any driver who wants to be a gas miser but doesnt want to shell out the extra bucks for a hybrid, and would like to experience Fahrvergngen.
I have never owned a VW but after having VW TDI's as rentals in Europe a couple times I had to buy one for my commuter @ home. Compared to other small cars I've owned (Toyota, Mazda & ford) the Audi like feel and quality of the materials makes my TDI the most satisfying vehicle purchase of my adult life. I like the fact it's not a re-badged low budget car with a smooth body over a old chassis. It consistently gets over the EPA MPG rating (43.4 av over 55K / best of 54.6) and the sporty performance makes me forget I'm driving a fuel mizer.
The Golf R is a great car. Subtle, but handsome looks, brilliant interior and the general feel of quality just shows everywhere. Daily driving it is comfortable, beautifully equipped and rides very well. Once you decide to give it a bit of a push and get out on some winding roads, it just completely changes. The four wheel drive system provides an astonishing amount of grip while the turbo charged 2.0L engine surges once above 3000 RPM all the way to redline. It gives you a gentle push back in the seat and it wants to get to that next corner as quick as it can. Brakes are fantastic and slow you just as quickly. Four six feet people can sit in it in comfort without issue and the interior feels more like a luxury car then hot hatch.
