Generation Overview

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is part of this midsize sedan's sixth generation of production, which spanned from 2011 through 2018. This generation debuted with several changes compared to its previous generation, including revised steering and a longer overall wheelbase for more cabin and cargo space. Specifically, the 2016 Jetta's wheelbase measures 104.4 inches, which is 2.9 inches longer than the 2010 Jetta's wheelbase. The result is a more spacious cabin that's comfortable even for taller adults.

By the 2016 model year specifically, the Jetta ditched its base engine and replaced it with a turbocharged four-cylinder; this was also the first year that the Jetta saw its upgraded five-inch touchscreen infotainment interface.

2016 Volkswagen Jetta Engine Options

Both the Jetta 1.4T S and SE trims are outfitted with a turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder engine at 150 hp, which is paired to a five-speed manual transmission. However, a five-speed automatic was also available when the vehicle was sold as new.

The 1.8T Sport and 1.8T SEL are both equipped with a turbocharged 1.8L four-cylinder engine at 170 hp; on the Sport trim, a five-speed manual is the standard transmission. However, a six-speed automatic transmission is available (and comes standard on the SEL trim).

The front-wheel drive 2016 Jetta GLI receives a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine at 210 hp and is paired to either a six-speed manual or automated-manual transmission.

2016 Volkswagen Jetta Interior

The 2016 Jetta boasts a 15.7-cubic-foot trunk, which offers space for your groceries, luggage, or other everyday gear. Combine this with standard 60/40-split-folding rear seats and the 2016 Jetta offers ample storage space. When rear seats are intact, there's also a lot of room for passengers to stretch out, thanks to the sixth-generation Jetta's longer wheelbase.
