The Audi A5 gets a reboot for part of the 2025 model year and is available solely as a five-seat sedan with a rear hatch to access the trunk. The updated A5 also replaces the outgoing A4, Audi’s second-to-smallest sedan above the subcompact A3. Unlike earlier A5 models, the new car will not have the coupe or convertible body styles. Powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder and equipped with standard all-wheel drive, the A5 is packed with Audi’s latest tech, including a natural-speech AI assistant.

Third generation Audi A5

Audi is causing some headaches with its model lineup, so we'll try to explain. The new Audi A5, which came out in the middle of 2025, replaces both the previous A5 and the smaller A4. The new car retains the four-door hatchback design of the older A5, but the two-door coupe and convertible models have been discontinued. While some 2025 Audi A5 models are the older version, some are also the newer car, so it's important to look carefully to make sure which version of the Audi A5 you're looking at.

The new A5 gets down the road thanks to a 268-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder coupled to a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The cabin features an 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster, a 14.5-inch infotainment screen, and a 10.9-inch display ahead of the front passenger seat. Cargo volume is another highlight of the A5: The power-operated hatchback opens to reveal 22.6 cubic feet of space. That’s more than what many full-size sedans offer.

Second generation Audi A5

Car shoppers who prefer variety will be drawn to the second generation of the A5. That’s because for the bulk of its lifespan it was available in three body styles: a two-door coupe and convertible as well as a sedan with a handy hatchback. True to Audi tradition, all three came with standard all-wheel drive. For the 2025 model year, the coupe and convertible models were discontinued, though the sedan version (which Audi calls Sportback) continued and overlapped with the all-new A5 sedan. A punchy turbocharged four-cylinder engine dutifully provided plenty of power and reasonable fuel economy. The sedan was arguably the most practical choice by delivering significantly more rear passenger space and cargo volume. Yet car shoppers who don’t mind a little added style over substance will be drawn to the coupe’s sleeker shape or the sun-loving enjoyment offered by the convertible.

First generation Audi A5

Based on the existing A4 sedan, the A5 was originally offered only in coupe format when it arrived for the 2008 model year. A convertible was added in 2010, and for the rest of the first-generation production run, this luxury duo provided a stylish means of getting around. As expected, there is only so much space that can be carved out for the rear seat in either the coupe or convertible—though it’s fine for average-size adults for short trips. Cargo room measures in at 12.2 cubic feet in the coupe and 10.2 cubic feet in the convertible. Despite its lengthy nine-year run, even the 2017 model year A5 offered an elegant interior with a logically thought-out dashboard. Some tech touches were notably absent, however, including any form of USB port and limited smartphone connectivity.
