The 2021 BMW M340i is a compelling mix of strong performance and daily practicality
Powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and underpinned by a sport-tuned suspension, the 2021 BMW M340i doesn’t lack for performance. Available all-wheel drive adds foul-weather capability to the mix, making it an excellent choice for driving enthusiasts who want a little extra thrill in their daily drive but can’t give up daily practicality.
There’s a lot to like about the BMW 3 Series in general, and the M340i in particular. The drivetrain and suspension combine for excellent driving dynamics. The M Sport performance package dials up handling a notch, at the expense of ride quality. Inside, the M340i features premium trim like leather seating surfaces and plenty of modern high-tech features like smartphone integration and advanced driver assist on the options menu.
As good as the M340i is though, competitors haven’t stood still. Aside from the traditional BMW grille, the styling borders on generic, especially from the rear. Additionally, many features that are standard on competitors are on the options sheet, making finding a fully equipped model challenging.

What We Like
Performance: There’s no question that the 2021 M340i upholds the BMW tradition of driving performance. The powerful turbocharged 6-cylinder is a joy to drive, and the powerful brakes are an unsung hero in the dynamics department. While the M Sport package may firm up the suspension too much for some tastes, there’s no denying it enhances the performance experience.
Practicality: As fun as the M340i is to drive, it’s also a completely practical four-door sedan in the day-to-day grind. The comfortable interior has plenty of space for four, and the trunk also has plenty of space. The rear seatbacks even fold down in a 40/20/40 split to accommodate larger objects.
Interior Design: BMW designs its interiors around the driver, which means everything is within easy reach, and for the most part easy to use. There are definitely worse places to spend time behind the wheel.
What Needs Improvement
Too many features are optional: New-car shoppers can enjoy the experience of customizing their BMW through the extensive options list, but with so many features on the options list, it can be difficult for used-car shoppers to navigate. This is especially true for advanced driver assist systems, which are all optional on the M340i, and divided between two groups: Driving Assistance and Driving Assistance Professional packages. We consider these systems very useful for buyers, so keep an eye out for those packages.
