Strong performance and sharp styling define the 2022 BMW M340 luxury sport sedan
The 2022 BMW M340i features a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder under the hood, available all-wheel drive and great driving responses. It’s an excellent choice for driving enthusiasts looking for thrills in their daily drive, but who can’t or won’t make the stretch to the more fire-breathing performance of the BMW M3.
That powerful engine is backed up by a sport-tuned suspension that can be tightened further with the available M Sport package, and steering and braking performance are beyond reproach. Depending on how the car is equipped, BMW isn’t shy about the luxury as well, with premium leather seating surfaces and plenty of modern high-tech features like smartphone integration and advanced driver assist on the options menu.
However, competition has caught up to the BMW M340i. While its front end is certainly distinctive, the rear end styling could be mistaken for any number of other vehicles. That M Sport package adds performance but hurts ride quality. And, many features that are standard on competitors are on the options sheet, making finding a fully equipped model challenging.

What We Like
Performance: BMW built its reputation on its vehicles’ capabilities on the road, and the M340i holds up that tradition. The turbocharged 6-cylinder feels wonderful to drive, and the powerful brakes are an unsung hero in the dynamics department. While the M Sport package may firm up the suspension too much for some tastes, there’s no denying it enhances the performance experience.
Practicality: As part of the BMW 3 Series family, the M340i is an eminently practical car in day-to-day life. The interior is comfortable for four with a nicely sized and shaped rear seat, and the trunk has plenty of room. The rear seatbacks even fold down in a 40/20/40 split to accommodate larger objects.
Interior Design: The interior design of the M340i is driver focused, which means everything is within easy reach for the driver, and for the most part easy to use. The addition of a fully digital instrument panel for the 2022 model year adds a level of customization to the driving experience, as well as a modern feel. There are definitely worse places to spend time behind the wheel.
What Needs Improvement
Too many features are optional: BMW has traditionally left many key features on the options list, which helps to create a customized experience but also means shoppers need to look carefully for critical features. This includes advanced driver assist systems, which are divided between two different options groups on the M340i, known as the Driving Assistance and Driving Assistance Professional packages.
