The 2023 BMW M340i is the high-performance version of the 3 Series sport sedan
The BMW M340i brings the highest level of performance to the 3 Series lineup without going up to the extreme M3. The M340i and the rest of the 3 Series lineup were updated for the 2023 model year with a refreshed exterior style and a new interior design that features a high-tech vibe. Central to the interior redesign is a large curved screen incorporating a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch infotainment display under one pane of glass. The infotainment system features the latest BMW operating system. BMW offers the M340i with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive. Under the hood is a BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine that puts out a plentiful 382 horsepower. No manual transmission is available—the engine is teamed with a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The updates to the 3 Series help it to better compete against models like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, Cadillac CT4, and Genesis G70.

What We Like
Performance: With 382 horses on tap, the BMW M340i is very quick off the line—especially when equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW says the M340i xDrive will reach 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. Like other BMWs, the M340i exhibits outstanding handling with responsive steering and a suspension that rides smoothly but still keeps the car flat in the turns. At the same time, the M340i is comfortable and quiet when cruising down the freeway.
Fuel economy: According to the EPA, the BMW M340i achieves 31 mpg on the highway, 23 mpg in the city, and 26 mpg combined — impressive figures given the car’s performance.
Strangely the all-wheel-drive version gets slightly better estimated fuel economy on the highway. The M340i can cruise more than 400 miles between fill-ups with either version.Interior: With the redesign of the BMW M340i, the interior has a high-tech vibe with the large curved display screen. The updated infotainment system is easy to configure to put the most used features at the forefront, while other features are just a swipe away. The sport seats up front are both stylish and supportive with multiple adjustments, including an extension for the seat bottom. The rear seats are a little tight for adults but usable in a pinch.
What Needs Improvement
Technology: While the new infotainment system works well, there are some annoyances. It’s easy to change the temperature, but the rest of the climate controls are accessed in a submenu, which can be frustrating. Surprisingly BMW does not make all advanced driver systems standard. For example, we think a luxury car with an as-new price of around $60,000 should come with adaptive cruise control, but it is an added extra on the M340i.
