With three rows of seating in its truly premium-feeling cabin, the 2020 BMW X7 is BMW’s biggest SUV. It offers a laundry list of standard and optional features that include impressive comfort and technology upgrades. The 2020 X7 comes in three trim levels, each with its own engine. The entry-level xDrive40i uses a strong six-cylinder, while the xDrive50i gets a V8. For 2020, BMW introduced the sportier M50i, which bumps up the V8’s power and adds a raucous exhaust note. For most shoppers, the six-cylinder engine will provide plenty of acceleration and capability—it can even tow up to 5,400 pounds when properly equipped.
Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.
While the X7 is big, it still focuses on coddling passengers in the first two rows, and its third row is less roomy than some competitors. Also, the BMW’s controls can be unintuitive and sometimes frustrating to use, particularly the climate control.
Ample power: The X7 xDrive40i’s standard 6-cylinder provides plenty of power, even for the big X7. Upgrading to one of the V8-powered trim levels gets you pretty astonishing acceleration for such a large vehicle.
Luxurious ride: The X7 provides a plush ride with its standard adaptive air suspension, but if you want maximum ride comfort, look for models with the Dynamic Handling package. This adds a system that reads the road ahead with special sensors in order to anticipate and cushion any bumps.
Quality interior: BMW filled the X7’s cabin with high-quality materials, and packed it with technology and comfort features. The sense of luxury extends to the little details in the well-made cabin.
Confusing controls: There’s a definite learning curve when it comes to figuring out all the X7’s controls, and some remain frustrating even then. The climate controls in particular tend to require constant fiddling, even in automatic mode.
