The 2021 BMW X7 loses mid-range V8 trim
BMWs don’t come bigger than the X7. This is BMW’s largest SUV, with three rows of seating in its impeccably appointed interior. On top of an extensive list of luxury and technology features, the 2021 BMW X7 also offers two strong engines to choose from. For 2021, BMW dropped the xDrive50i trim level from the lineup, leaving the entry-level xDrive40i with its six-cylinder and the sportier M50i with a raucous V8. We still think the six-cylinder engine provides ample acceleration for most shoppers, and it can even tow up to 5,400 pounds when equipped with the optional tow hitch.
Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.
The X7 has a tighter third row than some competitors, and some of its features are less than intuitive to use. The climate controls in particular can be frustrating. But the BMW has power and presence to spare, and a plethora of advanced technology features. The optional suite of advanced driver aids in particular can help take the edge off any commute.

What’s We Like
Ample power: Sometimes luxury vehicles can have underwhelming standard engines, but the base 6-cylinder in the xDrive40i has plenty of power to move even the big X7. For more spice, the M50i comes with a 523-horsepower V8 that makes the X7 a shockingly fast large SUV.
Luxurious ride: The standard adaptive air suspension on the 2021 X7 provides a plush ride to begin with, but adding the Dynamic Handling package gets you a system that uses sensors to read the road ahead to anticipate bumps for maximum ride comfort.
Quality interior: The X7’s interior is impeccably made, using high-quality leather and trim materials. It’s packed with technology and comfort features, but the sense of luxury it conveys extends into all the little details as well.
What Needs Improvement
Confusing controls: Not all of the X7’s systems are particularly easy to operate, and there’s a definite learning curve to the controls. In particular, the climate controls can be confusing and busy. Even in automatic mode, there are a lot of adjustments available, so you never really stop having to fiddle with the settings.
