2022 Hyundai Accent ends run as a top subcompact
The Hyundai Accent is officially a “used-only” proposition, as 2022 marked the final year for this subcompact car. It outlasted many of its rivals as buyers increasingly looked to mini-SUVs to fill the role of small four-door hatchbacks and sedans. That said, the Accent is still a solid option for those who put inexpensive transportation above features and frills.
For 2022, the Accent dropped the manual transmission, leaving a continuously variable transmission (CVT) the sole choice. While CVTs are fuel-efficient, they don’t typically offer the speed and response of a regular step-geared transmission, nor the engagement of a manual transmission. It’s hard to argue with the Accent’s fuel economy, though. With EPA-estimated mileage up to 36 mpg combined and 41 mpg on the highway, the 2022 Accent is about as close to a hybrid as a non-hybrid can get. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. What We Like:
Handling: Don’t let the horsepower figures fool you into thinking the Accent can’t be fun; the well-sorted suspension still gave the Accent a light and nimble feel in turns and corners, and could still make seeking a less-traveled twisting road worth the effort.
Comfort: The Accent’s quiet and well-built cabin makes it one of the few subcompacts that could stop most road noise and harsh jolts from upsetting the interior calm. You don’t normally associate small economy cars with premium sound damping, but the Accent performs like a more expensive midsize sedan by keeping passengers isolated from rough roads and rattles. The Accent’s sloping dash and ample headroom create a roomy feel inside. The front seats don’t have a lot of support, but otherwise the Accent’s comfort is a win overall.
Utility: Even though Hyundai discontinued the Accent hatchback after 2017, the sedan offers good utility with 13.7 cubic feet of trunk space, as well as a large trunk opening, low load-in height, and a low trunk floor. The rear seats split in a useful 60/40 configuration.
What Needs Improvement
Technology: The tech essentials Hyundai added to the redesigned Accent in 2018 carried over to the 2022 model, and include five- and seven-inch touchscreens (for the base model and upper trims, respectively). Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are available, but only on the SEL and Limited trims, and the same goes for Bluetooth® with voice control, and a six-speaker sound system. There’s no factory navigation available, and although a rearview camera came standard, forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking only came with the top Limited trim. An admirable effort, but still disappointing for shoppers on a budget.

RepairPal gave the Hyundai Accent an overall reliability rating of 4 out of 5 stars, which RepairPal describes as Excellent. This rating ranks Hyundai Accent 11th out of 27 among Subcompact Cars.
RepairPal reports that the average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Hyundai Accent is $362, compared to an average of $447 for Subcompact Cars and $591 for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.
According to RepairPal, Hyundai Accent owners bring their vehicles into a repair shop for unscheduled repairs an average of 1.1 times per year, compared to an average of 1.0 times for Subcompact Cars and 1.3 times for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.
