The 2019 Jaguar XE is sporty and fun to drive but has limitations

The 2019 Jaguar XE delivers agile handling and entertaining driving manners in a compact luxury sedan shape that’s adept at squeezing through small gaps in traffic. This makes the XE perfect for city driving, while its smooth suspension takes the sting out of long highway drives too. The XE impresses with an extremely wide range of powertrain choices. In the lineup are a turbocharged four-cylinder in two states of tune, a turbocharged diesel four-cylinder, a supercharged V6, and even a turbocharged V8 that churns out 592 horsepower in the range-topping SV Project 8 model. Most trims of the XE are also available with all-wheel drive.

The XE’s tidy dimensions do limit its overall practicality if rear legroom and a cavernous trunk are high on your list of car shopping priorities. Rivals like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class offer more cabin space and trunk volume.

  • The XE is available in a variety of new trims, including the 20D, 20D Landmark, 20D Premium, 20D Prestige, 20D R-Sport, 25T, 25T Landmark, 25T Premium, 25T Prestige, 25T R-Sport, 30T 300 Sport, 30T Portfolio, 30T Premium, 30t Prestige, 30t R-Sport, and SV Project 8.
  • The Base, Portfolio, Premium, Prestige, and R-Sport trims have been discontinued for 2019.
  • XE trims have been upgraded with Skylight(s), Leatherette & Cloth, Leatherette Seats, 20 Inch Plus Wheels, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto as standard equipment this year.
  • Rear Seat Heaters features are now available as options on select trims.
  • The S trim now comes with Leather Seats as standard equipment.

What We Like

Performance: The personality of the Jaguar XE is completely at the whim of the car shopper and which engine they prefer under the hood. The turbo-fours are punchy, the supercharged V6 is a blast, and the turbocharged V8 turns the XE into a high-speed sedan that humbles many sports cars.

Fuel economy: If you prefer better fuel economy over 0-60 mph bragging rights, the available turbocharged diesel four-cylinder engine delivers excellent fuel economy. Even fitted with all-wheel drive, the diesel offers an EPA-estimated 40 mpg during highway driving.

Agility, steering responses: Jaguar has made the XE a delight to drive thanks to its crisp steering responses and sharp handling. You’ll find yourself looking for roads with more twists and turns simply to enjoy the XE’s fine balance.

What Needs Improvement

Infotainment system: The XE trails the competition when it comes to its onboard technology and infotainment system. While the 10-inch touchscreen is attractive, there are too many quirks in how it operates. Thankfully, smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ is available, and we recommend keeping an eye out for models that have this option.
