4. 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0L Automatic

Offering a slight improvement in fuel economy over the 2014 model year, the 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek with its base 2.0-liter engine gets an estimated 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.2 So, what are some of the other differences between the 2014 and 2015 XV Crosstrek? For starters, the 2015 model year sees the addition of a new base trim, known as the 2.0i. Standard features in this trim that are not found in the base trim of the 2014 XV Crosstrek include:

  • rear privacy glass
  • a 6.2-inch touchscreen interface
  • a rearview camera

On the flip side, buyers will need to upgrade to the next trim level (the 2.0i Premium) for heated mirrors and heated front seats. From a space perspective, the 2015 XV Crosstrek is unchanged, offering 22.3 cubic feet with seats intact and 51.9 cubic feet with second-row seats folded down.

3. 2015-2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5L Automatic

If a crossover or wagon doesn't appeal to you, a full-size sedan like the 2015-2016 Subaru Legacy may be a better choice. Both model years of this vehicle offer an estimated 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway in their base 2.5-liter engine that, like all Subarus, comes standard with AWD. The differences between the 2015 and 2016 Legacy are minimal, with the 2016 version seeing improved shock absorbers and more infotainment features in some trim levels.2
