Fourth generation Toyota Highlander Hybrid
The Highlander line was completely redesigned for the 2020 model year. The most important change was the shift from a V6-based hybrid drivetrain to a four-cylinder gas engine with a hybrid system. The four-cylinder hybrid system offers a little less power than the outgoing generation but brings improved fuel economy. A front-wheel-drive option was offered, further improving fuel economy. Most Highlander Hybrid SUVs of the current generation offer an EPA-estimated 35 mpg in combined city/highway driving
.While the Highlander Hybrid offers seating for up to seven passengers, legroom and overall space in the third row are limited, so be sure to climb back there and confirm the back row will work for you if you think you’ll be using it more than occasionally. Cargo space is about average for midsize three-row SUVs.

Third generation Toyota Highlander Hybrid
The third-generation Highlander Hybrid was powered by a V6 engine paired with electric motors for the front and rear axles. The combination gets an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in combined city/highway driving
. The Highlander Hybrid offered seating for up to seven passengers and about average cargo capacity for midsize SUVs.The technology package on the third-generation Highlander Hybrid was dated by the end of production, with small screens and no provision for smartphone integration like Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™. However, Toyota provided its own proprietary Entune® system for similar functions. Trim levels in the third generation ranged from basic family functionality to near-luxury SUV standards in the most expensive trims. As with the most recent generation, passenger room is limited in the third-row seats. Be sure to check the back row if you plan to use it more than occasionally.
