The Volkswagen ID.4 EV makes a solidly safe play at the heart of the electric SUV segment

The Volkswagen ID.4 EV is a five-seat electric SUV that offers an EPA-estimated range between 203 and 275 miles. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. Three trims are available, including the new Standard model that joins the ID.4 lineup for the 2023 model year. It has a lower base price, but the ID.4 Standard also comes with a smaller battery that provides less range than upper trims. Rear-wheel drive is standard, though all-wheel drive with dual electric motors is available.

VW played it safe with its family-friendly electric SUV. Compared to rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai Ioniq 5, the ID.4 EV has an exterior design that blends into the background. The same can be said of the ID.4’s driving dynamics, which emphasize comfort over sportiness.

We appreciate the smooth ride, and the ID.4 is easy to maneuver. Yet acceleration, even with the dual-motor setup and larger battery pack, doesn’t provide the punch found in many competitors.

5 reasons to buy the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 EV

What We Like

Interior storage: VW definitely did its homework when it came time to crafting an interior with loads of handy storage nooks. The center console is highly configurable and is complemented by large storage pockets in the doors. Behind the split-folding rear seatback is 30.3 cubic feet of cargo space, good for an SUV this size and plenty of space for the necessities of a small family.

Easy to drive: About the same overall size as VW’s Tiguan compact SUV, the ID.4 EV doesn’t feel out of its depth when it comes to navigating snug parking spots or city driving. Light and accurate steering allows you to confidently place this electric SUV where you want it.

Standard tech and driver aids: Even the base version of the ID.4 EV is equipped with many desirable features, including wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto. A 12-inch touchscreen is now standard for the 2023 model year. In terms of driver aids, every ID.4 EV comes with lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic warning, blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, and more.

What Needs Improvement

Quirky controls: VW needs to do some rethinking when it comes to the ID.4 EV’s cabin controls. Window switches, for example, are something seemingly simple, but to open or close the rear windows, the driver must use a finicky touch point on the door panel. The infotainment system is also too complex and has some unintuitive menus.
