A smooth ride and cargo-friendly cabin make the ID.4 EV an electric SUV that’s comfortable and practical
The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 EV could be the perfect electric SUV for car shoppers who don’t want something flashy or outlandish. In this regard, the ID.4's subtle styling and its sedate driving manners have definite appeal. Competitors such as the Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 opt for a bolder, sportier approach when it comes to attracting EV customers.
Motivating the base ID.4 is a single electric motor that sends a total of 201 horsepower to the rear wheels. For added acceleration and grip, a dual-motor powertrain with all-wheel drive is optional and provides 295 horsepower. A comfortable and quiet ride is the dominating driving characteristic of the ID.4, which is appealing to many EV customers.
Unfortunately, the infotainment system has a steep learning curve and many controls are unintuitive. In the plus column, interior storage space is ample in both rows of seating, and there’s decent cargo space as well.

What We Like
Driver-assist features: Volkswagen equips the ID.4 EV with a long lineup of driver aids. That’s a smart move considering this electric SUV is very much targeting young families, among other EV shoppers. Standard driver assist gear includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot warning.
Comfortable driving experience: Sure, the ID.4 EV isn’t the wildest and sportiest EV on sale today. But its supple suspension takes the edge off bumpy roads and makes for a relaxed driving experience. Thanks to its electric powertrain, the interior is extremely quiet too.
Storage space: Behind the split-folding rear seatback, there’s about 30 cubic feet of cargo volume. That’s good, though it's the number of clever storage nooks and crannies throughout the interior that really help to set the ID.4 EV apart from other electric cars and SUVs.
What Needs Improvement
Glitchy controls: Less can be more, especially when it comes to complicated controls and slow-to-respond infotainment commands. These are both notable issues with the ID.4 no matter which of the two available touchscreens you choose. (A 10-inch screen is standard and a 12-inch screen is optional.)
