2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge is a stylish electric SUV
The 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge added a new look to its front and rear bumpers, but otherwise, it remains unchanged. Its sporty dual-motor powertrain offers more than 400 horsepower, delivering quick acceleration whether you're merging onto a highway or pulling away from a stoplight.
That impressive horsepower comes at a cost, though. The XC40 Recharge's EPA-estimated range on a single charge is just 223 miles. That's quite a bit less than what's on offer from rival electric SUVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E or the Hyundai Ioniq 5. It's also not as efficient as competitors like the Tesla Model Y, meaning you'll spend more on charging the Volvo.
But the electric XC40's stylish interior is impressive and it is a bit quieter than its gas-powered counterpart. It also comes stocked with an easy-to-use touchscreen and four USB ports, ensuring your phone remains charged and ready to go.
All Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric years

- The P8 Twin Plus and P8 Twin Ultimate trims have been discontinued for 2023.
- XC40 Recharge Electric trims have been upgraded with Automated Cruise Control, Cloth Seats, Heated Steering Wheel, Leatherette & Cloth, 20 Inch Plus Wheels, Harman Kardon Sound, and Navigation System as standard equipment this year.
What We Like
Speedy acceleration: The XC40 Recharge goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, quicker than the Tesla Model Y or Ford Mustang Mach-E. That means getting up to speed or passing on the highway is a piece of cake.
Quiet and stylish interior: The electric version of the XC40 is quite a bit quieter than its all-gas counterpart. The well-insulated and good-looking interior delivers a mostly silent ride.
Solid tech: The Google-based operating system that runs the infotainment touchscreen is prone to hiccups, but it's otherwise very easy to use. The vehicle has four USB plugs, making it easy to keep your phone charged.
What Needs Improvement
Range and efficiency: The XC40 Recharge gets fewer miles on a single charge than some of its rivals, and its electric motors aren't very efficient. That means you'll pay more over time to charge the Volvo than some of its competitors. The 2024 model has a higher-capacity battery that helps improve range.
