The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge has a short range but plenty of power
The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge is the electric version of Volvo's XC40 compact SUV. It’s the smallest SUV Volvo makes, but it makes up for its size with a dual-motor powertrain that packs 402 horsepower — the power of a much larger vehicle. It delivers brisk acceleration for merging onto a highway or pulling away from a stoplight.
That power comes at a cost, however. The XC40 Recharge's EPA-estimated range on a single charge is just 223 miles. Range figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new and assume a full battery charge. Range will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info. That's quite a bit less than what's on offer from rival electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It's also not as efficient as competitors like the Tesla Model Y, meaning you'll likely spend more on charging the Volvo.
The XC40 Recharge's stylish interior is impressive and it is a bit quieter than its gas-powered counterpart. It also comes stocked with an easy-to-use touchscreen and four USB ports, ensuring your phone remains charged and ready to go.

What We Like
Strong acceleration: The dual-motor XC40 Recharge offers a total output of 402 horsepower, so this SUV gets going in a hurry. Passing on highways is a breeze thanks to how rapidly this quick-footed SUV accelerates.
Quiet cabin: Thanks to the electric motor and ample sound insulation, the XC40 Recharge is impressively quiet. Perhaps the biggest upgrades from the gas-powered XC40 are its electric counterpart's quiet ride and the speedy supply of air conditioning or heat.
Modern technology: Apple CarPlay® is standard, and the Android-based system that runs the touchscreen might have a few hiccups but should be intuitive for most people to understand. Over-the-air software updates should alleviate some of the bugs Edmunds noted during testing.
What Needs Improvement
Storage: The 20.4 cubic feet of storage space in the XC40 Recharge is a bit less than competitors offer. The gas-powered Buick Encore GX, for example, is about 3 inches shorter in length but offers 23.5 cubic feet of storage.
